"As a critic, one analogy for David Lehman is Jim Miller, whose music book concludes that musical evolution ended with punk. Ditto Lehman; there's something pathos-laden in writing a whole damn book (The Last Avant-Garde) that endeavors to explain that it was history that ended, not one's youth. This makes Lehman the anti-Proust, probably not a proud title. I saw a homeless guy in Castro once who was selling various objects on a blanket—old vinyl, broken dolls, a toaster, and one book: Lehman's poetry."
