"Sports Night improves.
Sorkin finds his level a few episodes in, and, in many ways, I enjoy Sports Night a hell of a lot more than the first season of The West Wing, whose sanctimony I just about drowned in, even when I liked the show.
Over the course of all of season one and the first half of season two, before Sorkin clearly lost interest and stopped writing the show, Josh Charles (the guy playing Dan on SportsNight) put in one of the most complex performances I've ever seen in a sitcom. Dan's the asshole who grew out of it, the hella smart, womanizing, pot smoking frat jerk who realized lots of that stuff was for suckers, and trying like hell to be smart, funny, AND a good human being was worth it. It's just awesome to watch this actor unpack this really complicated guy.
Also, Sports Night's fantasia of the totally supportive journalistic workplace is, well, a fantasia."
